L'acqua batteriostatica per uso iniettabile è un'acqua sterile non pirogenica che contiene lo 0,9% di alcol benzilico (9mg/mL) aggiunto come conservante batteriostatico.
La differenza tra l'acqua batteriostatica e l'acqua sterile è che le altre acque sterili per iniezione non contengono un agente batteriostatico. In quanto tali, sono fiale monodose e devono essere scartate dopo un solo utilizzo.
In realtà è il miglior solvente grazie agli agenti conservanti che mantengono la purezza e l'integrità e dissolvono efficacemente gli aggregati liofilizzati. (HGH, HCG, Peptidi...)
