Description

Aldactone (spironolactone), an aldosterone receptor antagonist, causes water and sodium to be removed from the body. This compound thus reduces potassium losses. 

Potassium-sparing diuretics like Aldactone are mild and have little diuretic effect. However, athletes must be careful not to take potassium while taking these products, as this would increase serum potassium levels. This would be dangerous.

As an anti-androgen, Aldactone is particularly popular with female athletes because of its ability to minimize the virilizing effects of anabolic steroids. Women usually take 50 mg daily and the duration of intake can be up to 2 weeks.

As a mild diuretic, with a fairly long half-life, bodybuilders use Aldactone a week before their competition to dry out and excrete water. A dose of 25 mg twice a day is recommended.

Bodybuilders use it as a diuretic and take it several days before a contest to get a ripped and dry physique.

Usually combined with another diuretic like furosemide or other.
